ROLLE, Switzerland, Sept. 29, 2026 – PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced Country Soil (PPG15-30) as its 2027 Color of the Year. A warm, saturated hue that blends beige, taupe and gray, Country Soil draws inspiration from the natural world, evoking clay-rich earth and weathered stone. The color sits at the center of PPG's 2027 global color theme, Foundations, which includes three distinct palettes: Solid Ground, Quiet Zone, and Life Shared.

Since 2013, PPG global color experts have gathered for a dedicated annual workshop to analyze emerging trends influencing color direction across industries including architecture, consumer goods and industrial design. For 2027, the forecast marks a notable shift from the bright, expressive hues of 2026 toward more muted palettes, offering customers guidance tailored to a wide range of design preferences.
“Country Soil is designed for slowing down,” said Irina Hanhisalo, PPG color category lead, EMEA, Architectural Coatings. “For 2027, we have selected a grounding color that acts as a solid foundation for any project. Inspired by the warm, natural hues of clay, it provides a base layer with a soft, neutral tone. Rather than treating wall color as a decorative surface layer, Country Soil creates a space to settle and recharge.”
Country Soil's depth and versatility make it adaptable with a variety of interior styles. It can be used as an accent color or applied throughout an entire room, including walls, trim and ceiling for a more immersive effect. It also works well within established design frameworks such as the “60-30-10” rule: It can serve as the dominant color across 60% of a space on the walls, complemented by a secondary trend tone on 30% through furniture or textiles, with a vibrant accent color across the remaining 10% for a balanced, considered look.
Country Soil carries a low light reflectance value, diffusing light rather than reflecting it. This lends rooms a quiet, enveloping quality ideal for spaces where a sense of calm is a priority. Its neutral tone makes it a timeless choice, providing the freedom to update decor, art and furniture over time without losing visual cohesion. It is also equally suited to exterior applications, where its natural tone blends with an outdoor environment.
As the 2027 Color of the Year, it brings together PPG's Foundations theme, which ranges from understated, muted tones to warm, energetic hues. It pairs naturally with organic materials and textures featured in the Solid Ground palette, creates a lighter expression when combined with soft pastels of the Quiet Zone palette, and complements the vintage sports aesthetic of the Life Shared palette.
