PPG’s Oak Creek Paint and Coatings Plant to Host Students on National Manufacturing Day
Plant announces $10,000 grant from the PPG Foundation to Discovery
World
OAK CREEK, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced it will hold an educational event for
local high school students at its Oak Creek plant on Oct. 6 to mark
National Manufacturing Day. This initiative is organized by the National
Association of Manufacturers (NAM) to address the skilled labor
shortage, connect with future generations of manufacturers and ensure
ongoing success of the manufacturing industry.
Students from Oak Creek High School will be offered a tour of the PPG
facility and neighboring Yaskawa America and AIM Transfer & Storage to
learn about the manufacturing industry and how it impacts the world
through products or services. State Representative Jessie Rodriguez (21st
District) and Oak Creek Mayor Dan Bukiewicz will also attend the event.
PPG’s Oak Creek facility employs about 550 people and manufactures an
array of paint and coatings used in the industrial, automotive and
packaging sectors.
“We held a similar event last year that was well attended, and we expect
as many as 75 students this year,” said Jack Marshall, PPG plant
manager, Oak Creek. “Through this event, students will gain a deeper
understanding of manufacturing, supply chain, transportation and
logistics as well as the many career opportunities available to them.
There is significant growth taking place in southeastern Wisconsin
within manufacturing, and this is creating abundant opportunities for a
range of students, from those entering the trades to those going to
college for chemistry or engineering. Whatever the career interest,
there is a sustainable future here thanks to manufacturing.”
The plant also announced a $10,000 grant from the PPG Foundation to
Discovery World Science + Technology Center. Discovery World’s mission
is to provide fun and educational experiences through interactive
exhibits and educational programs for families and students in
Milwaukee, the region and the state of Wisconsin. The organization
generates excitement for science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) education and careers in the minds of children, even before they
head to high school and beyond.
PPG and the PPG Foundation place an emphasis on supporting STEM
programs, which is brought to life by various efforts through PPG
facilities locally and around the world. The Oak Creek plant provides
scholarships, offers internships and works to inspire the next
generation of workers to pursue academic careers in STEM fields. So far
this year, the plant has provided more than $320,000 in classroom grants
for school STEM projects through the PPG Foundation.
